Back in the fifteenth century, in a tiny village nearNuremberg, lived a family with eighteen children.Eighteen! In order to keep food on the table for this group, the father and head of the household, a goldith byprofession, worked almost eighteen hours a day at his tradeand any other paying chore he could find in theneighborhood.

Despite their seemingly hopeless condition, two ofthe elder children, Albrecht Durer and Albert Durer, hada dream. They both wanted to pursue their talent for art,but they knew full well that their father would never befinancially able to send either of them to Nuremberg tostudy at the academy.

After many long discussions at night in their crowdedbed, the two boys finally worked out a pact. They wouldtoss a coin. The loser would go down into the nearby minesand, with his earnings, support his brother while heattended the academy. Then, when that brother who wonthe toss completed his studies, in four years, he wouldsupport the other brother at the academy, either with salesof his artwork or, if necessary, also by laboring in themmes.

They tossed a coin on a Sunday morning after church.Albrecht Durer won the toss and went off to Nuremberg.

Albert went down into the dangerous mines and, forthe next four years, financed his brother, whose work at theacademy was almost an immediate sensation. Albrecht´setchings, his woodcuts, and his oils were far better thanthose of most of his professors, and by the time hegraduated, he was beginning to earn considerable fees for his commissioned works.

When the young artist returned to his village, theDurer family held a festive dinner on their lawn tocelebrate Albrecht´s succesul homecoming. After a longand memorable meal, punctuated with music andlaughter, Albrecht rose from his honored position at thehead of the table to drink a toast to his beloved brother forthe years of sacrifice that had enabled Albrecht to fulfillhis ambition. His closing words were, "And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you cango to Nuremberg to pursue your dream, and I will supportyou."

All heads turned in eager expectation to the far endof the table where Albert sat, tears streaming down hispale face, shaking his lowered head from side to sidewhile he sobbed and repeated over and over, "No... no..."

Finally, Albert rose and wiped the tears from hischeeks. He glanced down the long table at the faces heloved, and then, holding his hands close to his rightcheek, he said softly, "No, brother. I cannot go toNuremberg. It is too late for me. Look... look what fouryears in the mines he done to my hands! The bones inevery finger he been ashed at least once, and lately Ihe been suffering from arthritis so badly in my righthand that I cannot even hold a glass to return your toast, much less make delicate lines on parchment or canvaswith a pen or a brush. No, brother... for me it is too late."

More than 450 years he passed. By now, AlbrechtDurer´s hundreds of masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, watercolors, charcoals, woodcuts, andcopper engrings hang in every great museum in theworld, but the odds are great that you, like most people, are familiar with only one of Albrecht Durer´s works.More than merely being familiar with it, you very well mayhe a reproduction hanging in your home.

One day, long ago, to pay homage to Albert for allthat he had sacrificed, Albrecht Durer painstakingly drewhis brother´s abused hands with palms together and thinfingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawingsimply "Hands", but the entire world almost immediatelyopened their hearts to his great masterpiece and renamedhis tribute oflove "The Praying Hands".
